Preparing pensions for a new world

With the Dutch new pension system approaching, Pensioenfonds Detailhandel was ready for a digital refresh. One thing remained unchanged: 1.8 million participants at the center of everything.
The new system
The website of Pensioenfonds Detailhandel needed a refresh, with a stronger focus on the questions and situations of participants. Instead of simply broadcasting information, the content has been reorganized around real help requests. Fewer assumptions, more alignment with what people actually want to know.
That’s still quite rare. Portals are often treated as an afterthought, while public websites receive all the attention. But for a consistent digital experience, it shouldn’t matter where a participant looks. The portal therefore needed to match the website in usability, structure and visual identity.

Starting point
Nobody visits a pension website for fun. People come because they have a question or need clarity about something. In short: something is going on in their lives. And that had to be reflected in our designs.
The environment is changing. With new requirements from the AFM (Dutch Authority for the Financial Markets), the bar is set higher than ever. That calls for a different approach. Not only because of changing regulations under the new pension system, but also because participants themselves expect more.
Moving to a question-driven website requires clear choices. Not trying to say everything at once, but carefully deciding what someone needs at a particular moment. We reorganized everything without losing information. And at the same time, the experience became much more personal. A true win-win.
Start with the questions. We analyzed Frequently Asked Questions from both the website and the helpdesk, to understand what people are really dealing with.
Less repetition. We removed overlap and noise from the content and created a clearer, more logical structure.
The participant decides. Visitors indicate which group they belong to, ensuring everyone sees information and options tailored to their situation.

The user experience must be seamless: from the first question to a concrete action. That is exactly what makes the quality of the portal so important. For participants it is not a separate environment, but the next step in the same journey. The experience now feels more familiar and consistent. There is no difference in experience between the website and the portal, so there are no surprises for the participants.

Not an afterthought
The portal matters. This is where decisions are made and actions are taken. The website helps participants understand; the portal asks them to act. And at that moment, clarity and ease are essential. Clear steps, a familiar look and feel, and explanations that help without getting in the way.

To ensure continuity, we designed the portal as a seamless and logical continuation of the website.
Component comeback. We reduced the number of components and reused the same building blocks as the website.
Depth, step by step. Content is structured across three levels of depth, so users only see what they actually need.
Pensioen language clearly explained. To keep the content accessible for everyone, explanations of pension jargon are always within reach through pop-ups.

Moving forward together
Moving forward together
Everything now comes together: continuity, clarity and trust. Not by telling more, but by aligning better with users. In this way, we help nearly 2 million people manage their pensions more confidently, with less stress.
And this is just the beginning. We will continue developing this approach together with Pensioenfonds Detailhandel and with other pension funds that want to take the same step.
